On the surface, Nagito is a polite, friendly, easygoing, chill kind of guy who's almost always calm and smiling. He's notably one of, if not the most intelligent character in Danganronpa 2, and usually solves the murders long before anyone else. Nagito genuinely cares about his classmates, wanting nothing but the best for them and constantly striving to help them as much as possible. He respects ideals like love and friendship, and often emphasizes the importance of teamwork. However, he doesn't care for "ordinary, untalented people" such as himself and is extremely self-deprecating; Nagito sees himself as worthless trash whose life has no value, a fact that he tends to bring up often.

Nagito has an extreme, twisted obsession with hope that he bases everything he does around. He believes that hope is an absolute good that will always win in the end, and that anything done in the name of hope, even murder, is virtuous. He sees the Ultimates as the embodiments of hope that are chosen at birth, and thinks they can strengthen that hope by facing and overcoming despair. That being said, Nagito doesn't consider himself to be a "real" Ultimate, as he doesn't think his luck is a true talent. Nagito strongly associates hope with talent and talent with worth, and desires to be a "stepladder" towards a stronger hope, wishing to sacrifice himself so that the Ultimates can shine.
