Currently freelance. Watanabe started his career as an animator at Tsuchida Production, which he left in July 1986 after the studio's bankruptcy. He then joined Studio Gallop, where he was responsible for the character designs and chief animation direction for the studio's mahou shoujo titles such as Hime-chan no Ribbon, which was his debut as a character designer, Akazukin Chacha and Nurse Angel Ririka SOS as well as the hit TV anime series Kodomo no Omocha.
