After graduating from Osaka University of Arts, he joined studio Top Craft in 1983 and remained in the company when it became Studio Ghibli. He took part in creation of Laputa, My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service.

In 1990 he left the studio and published his first and most famous ghost stories anthology, Tales of Terror. The anthology became a bestseller and spawned a series of films and other franchise products. Since then, Kihara has written other popular series of books featuring ghost stories. He is often considered to be the pioneer of modern Japanese horror and one of the people responsible for the J-horror boom in Japan and abroad.
