Got his start in the industry as an animator at Madhouse in the late '70s. Soon after he switched his focus from animating to directing and storyboarding works himself. As a director Nakamura is often praised for his use of sound, and is known for some of the most notable works of the medium such as Serial Experiments Lain, Kino's Journey, and Ghost Hound among others.

Following several months of hospitalization, Nakamura passed away on June 29, 2013 due to pancreatic cancer. His death was announced nearly a month later.
